Furnace Replacement Begins with Your Home’s Needs
A new furnace should address the reasons you are considering replacement. Frequent equipment failures, uncomfortable temperature swings, and changes to the home each call for a different planning discussion. Understanding what has worked—and what has not—helps establish the scope of the installation.
For an existing San Marino home, that means considering both the furnace and the components connected to it. Duct condition, return airflow, thermostat location, and compatibility with the air conditioner can affect the result. Replacing equipment without evaluating those conditions may leave longstanding comfort problems unresolved.
Tell us about previous repairs, rooms that are difficult to heat, and any planned improvements. Window replacements, insulation upgrades, and additions can change heating requirements and should be considered before choosing furnace capacity.
When Should You Consider Replacing a Furnace?
Replacement may be practical when an existing furnace has substantial deterioration, needs repeated major repairs, or requires parts that are difficult to obtain. Planning ahead can also give you time to compare equipment and installation options before a complete failure forces a decision.
- Recurring breakdowns: Repeated component failures may make continued repair less attractive.
- Significant equipment deterioration: Overall condition matters alongside the immediate repair need.
- Limited parts availability: Obtaining suitable components can become a concern with some older systems.
- Changes in living space: Renovations may require reassessing heating capacity and distribution.
- Coordinated system upgrades: Replacing an aging air conditioner may be an opportunity to evaluate the furnace and shared airflow components together.
Age alone does not determine whether replacement is necessary. A serviceable furnace with an isolated problem may still be worth repairing. Higher bills or uneven temperatures also deserve investigation before assuming a new furnace will correct them.
Proper Furnace Sizing for San Marino Homes
San Marino’s cool winter mornings and evenings require dependable heating, but the amount of heat a home needs varies with its construction and layout. Floor area is only one consideration. Window area, ceiling heights, insulation, air leakage, and room configuration also affect the heating load.
A replacement should not automatically match the capacity of the old furnace. The original equipment may have been oversized, or improvements made since installation may have reduced the home’s heating needs. Additions can change those requirements in the other direction.
An oversized furnace may produce short heating cycles and noticeable temperature swings. Insufficient capacity can leave the system struggling during colder conditions. Equipment selection should account for the calculated heating load and the duct system’s ability to carry the required airflow.
Choosing Furnace Features That Fit Your Priorities
Furnaces vary in efficiency, heating stages, blower operation, and control requirements. Single-stage equipment delivers one heating output, while two-stage and modulating models can adjust output within their operating capabilities. Those differences can affect temperature consistency and sound when the system is properly selected and installed.
AFUE describes how efficiently a furnace converts fuel into useful heat over a typical heating season. A higher rating can reduce fuel use for the same heating output, but actual costs also depend on utility rates, thermostat settings, weather, and heat loss through the home.
We explain relevant features alongside installation requirements. Venting, drainage, controls, and connected equipment all belong in the comparison so you can evaluate the complete project.
Checking Ductwork Before Installing the Furnace
The new furnace needs an air-distribution system that can support its operating requirements. Accessible ducts, supply connections, return-air paths, and the filter arrangement should be evaluated during planning. Restrictions or damaged connections can affect performance even when the equipment is correctly sized.
Existing ducts do not automatically need replacement. Targeted repairs or modifications may be sufficient when the remaining ductwork is suitable. If the home has persistent comfort problems, identifying their cause before installation helps determine which improvements belong in the project.
Planning Around San Marino’s Existing Homes
Homes near Lacy Park and throughout the Huntington Drive area have different floor plans, equipment locations, and renovation histories. A furnace replacement should account for those individual conditions, including how equipment can be removed and installed without unnecessary disruption to the home.
An attic, closet, or garage installation can present different access and clearance requirements. Planning also needs to preserve room for future service and filter changes. Where a home has been expanded or interior walls have changed, the original duct arrangement may need attention to serve the current living space.
Let us know about rooms that have always felt colder than others. Those concerns may involve airflow, insulation, or thermostat placement and should be considered alongside the furnace selection.
Matching the Furnace with Your Air Conditioner
In many central HVAC systems, the furnace blower also moves air through the cooling coil. Replacing the furnace therefore requires checking its compatibility with any air conditioning equipment that will remain.
Blower capacity, coil dimensions, airflow requirements, and controls all affect how the connected system performs. A serviceable air conditioner may remain in place when the equipment combination is suitable. If both heating and cooling equipment need replacement, evaluating them together can help establish a coordinated installation plan.
Thermostat, Venting, and Connection Requirements
The supporting work depends on the furnace selected and the existing installation. Some models require changes to venting, combustion-air provisions, condensate drainage, or thermostat wiring. Fuel and electrical connections also need to suit the equipment and applicable installation requirements.
A thermostat that operates the existing furnace may not support every feature of the replacement. We explain whether compatible controls are needed to use staged heating or other selected functions. Reviewing these details before installation helps avoid surprises about the project scope.
What Should Your Furnace Installation Estimate Include?
A complete estimate should explain both the equipment and the work required to install it. When comparing proposals, check whether they address the same conditions and include the same supporting services.
- Proposed furnace: Equipment selection, capacity, and relevant operating features.
- Removal: Removal and disposal of the existing equipment.
- Duct connections: Planned supply and return modifications or repairs.
- Supporting work: Applicable venting, drainage, fuel, electrical, and control connections.
- Project requirements: Applicable permits, inspections, and installation conditions.
- Completion: Startup checks, cleanup, and an explanation of system operation.
Ask about exclusions and conditions that could change the estimate. Equipment access and modifications to existing connections can influence both cost and scheduling.
Startup Testing and Ongoing Furnace Care
After installation, startup checks help confirm that the furnace responds to the thermostat and operates according to the manufacturer’s requirements. Depending on the equipment, checks include ignition, blower settings, temperature rise, protective controls, and applicable venting or drainage connections.
We also explain thermostat operation, filter access, and recommended care. Keep installation records and warranty documents available for future reference. Professional air conditioning and heating maintenance provides opportunities to evaluate performance and identify service needs as the equipment ages.

Frequently Asked Questions About Furnace Installation
How do you determine the right furnace size for my home?
Equipment selection should account for the home’s heating load, including insulation, windows, ceiling heights, air leakage, and floor plan. The duct system must also support the required airflow. Square footage or the old furnace’s capacity alone is not enough.
Can I replace my furnace and keep my air conditioner?
Often, yes, if the air conditioner remains serviceable and the replacement furnace is compatible with its cooling coil, airflow requirements, and controls. The connected equipment should be evaluated before deciding what can remain.
Will I need a new thermostat with the furnace?
It depends on the equipment selected and the existing controls. Some furnaces can use a compatible conventional thermostat, while certain staged or communicating features require different controls or wiring.
Does furnace replacement require new ductwork?
Not always. Suitable existing ducts may remain in use. Inspection may identify targeted repairs or connection changes, while significant damage or airflow limitations can require more extensive work.
How long does furnace installation take?
Timing depends on equipment access, removal, duct modifications, venting, connections, and inspection requirements. Connor Air can explain the anticipated schedule after evaluating the property and defining the installation scope.
Will a higher-efficiency furnace lower my heating bills?
A higher-efficiency furnace can use less fuel for the same heating output, but actual bills also depend on utility rates, weather, thermostat settings, and heat loss through the home and ducts. Savings vary by household and installation.

I recently had my complete heating and air conditioning system replaced by Connor. Jarred gave me a good estimate and explained everything that needed to be done. His crew showed up when he said they would, did a great job, and cleaned up at the end of each day. Our system works great and I would highly recommend them to anyone who asks.Posted on Google![]()

They responded quickly to our request for a price. It was much less money than our other bids for the same equipment and labor. They got it all done in about a week and time on site was only part of one morning. We also now have them for the maintenance program.Posted on Google![]()

I called Connor Air & Heating after having a bad experience with Air-tro, who couldn't fix the problem. Eric from Connor came out and over the next three hours diagnosed the problem, replaced the central heating circuit board and thermostat, both of which he had in his truck. Got everything to work....then the fuse on the circuit board started to trip because of excess heat. Turns out he realized I had too many vents closed which caused the unit to turn off. Amazing. Now several days later the heater is working like a charm. I would wholeheartedly recommend Connor Air Conditioning & Heating.Posted on Google![]()
